[CASE] Dr.Explain is a useful help authoring tool for a sole-trader as well

Mike McLoughlin, the sole developer of Champion Software, specifies that Dr.Explain facilitates the maintenance execution of the software.

DE: Please tell us about your company?

My company is called Champion Software Ltd. (www.championsoftware.co.uk) It is based in North Devon in the United Kingdom. There are 2 employees, me and my wife. I have about 15 active customers all with bespoke applications. Most of my applications are WinForms desktop-based ones and are specifically written for each customer.

DE: Please tell us about your role in the company.

My name is Mike McLoughlin, I am in my mid-fifties and have been programming since I was 15. I am the sole developer and also deal with invoicing, purchasing, acquiring new customers, and so on.

DE: Why is user help documentation important to your company? What will you gain from your project?

It informs the customer of new features and allows them to find out for themselves how to use the software. As I am a sole-trader, I would not have time to answer a large number of telephone-based questions - or even emails.

DE: How did you manage to solve the problems with help docs before? What software did you use for that kind of work?

I used to use a word processor and include the file with my distribution.

DE: Did you compare Dr.Explain to other solutions/ways?

Yes, I looked at other help authoring solutions and also tried to provide help using text files or Word documents.

DE: Why did you choose the Dr.Explain software?

Because Dr.Explain is specifically designed for documentation, it made the whole process so much easier. For example, searching, indexing, hyperlinks, etc.

DE: What results did you receive? How do the results influence your business?

I achieved excellent results and now find maintaining help documents for my project a simple and quick task . Currently, I publish the help document in HTML format to the docs folder of my project's git repository. Git then automatically publishes this as a web-based help solution when I push the commit.
